30 firefighters tackle wheat field blaze in Singleton

Crews from Wesham, Blackpool, South Shore, and Fulwood were called to the field, off Mile Road, at around 1.50pm.

They were fighting a 200 metre long wall of flames in the grassland, which will have been dry after weeks of hot weather and little rain.

John Taylor from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the firefighters would have wanted "to make sure the fire will not break through or burn into property."

He said earlier: "They will concentrate resources as necessary, and that's what will be going on at the moment."

The service later said three water jets were used to put the fire out. The cause is "to be established." No-one was hurt.

Witnesses described seeing thick black smoke from nearby Poulton.

Singleton Maize Maze, a popular local attraction, was not affected. A spokesman said: "The smoke was coming from the south side of the village, the opposite direction to us, and it was certainly fairly intense for a time, before it later appeared to have come under control."

Anna McGreevy, a waitress at the Miller Arms pub said: "It was coming from the direction of Greenhalgh and there was a lot of smoke at one stage. You couldn't miss seeing it from the village.

"But it later dropped in intensity, presumably once the fire brigade arrived and got it under control."
