It is no secret that Preston people love their pooches.
But, according to new research, Labradors are top dog in the PR postcode, as well as being the nation’s favourite dog.
Sandra Halstead from Drakeshead Labradors, in Brinscall, puts the pup’s popularity down to their sociable and clever nature.
“There is a reason that Labradors are trained to be Guide Dogs and sniffer dogs and other help aids because they’re very trainable. They’re very sociable and good with children which is particularly useful if they are being taken into airports.”
Sandra, who has been breeding and training Labradors for over 50 years, also says the breed’s temperament allows them to be trained to be good working dogs.
“We train them for the gun too because they’re good, solid, working dogs. And because they’ve got short coats, don’t need much grooming.”
The findings come from analysis of microchipping data over the past 10 years. More than 509,000 Labradors were tagged in the past decade by pet registration companies Petlog and Animalcare, making it the country’s most popular breed.
In second place came the Jack Russell terrier with more than 376,000 animals tagged. The Staffordshire bull terrier was third, with 356,000. The data, which included five million dogs but excluded the numerous crossbreeds, revealed that Liverpool was the most popular postcode for shih tzus, while greyhounds are the dog of choice in Halifax.
