Firefighters from Lancaster and Morecambe were called to reports of a fire on Salt Ayre Lane, off Ovangle Road at around 1am.

A large quantity of waste material at the recycling centre, which is three storeys high and measures approximately 60m by 40m, was on fire.

More fire crews arrived at the scene shortly before 2am, including the aerial support unit and an aerial ladder platform. Residents were advised to close their windows and doors due to the large amounts of smoke caused by the blaze.

A Lancashire fire and rescue spokesman said: "We currently have six fire engines along with aerial support from an ALP and our drone in attendance... There's a large amount of smoke in the area and anyone being affected by it in the locality is advised to close windows and doors as a precaution."

By 5.30am the fire had been brought largely under control and the advice to keep doors and windows closed was lifted.

The number of fire engines at the scene of the fire has now been reduced to two. Crews will continue to monitor for any hot spot areas and dampen down using hose reel jets.
