Amelia Brome, her mum Cheryl and dad Mick are in Jacksonville, Florida, where she is preparing to undergo proton beam therapy this week.

A fund to cover the family’s living costs for the 12 weeks she is abroad has been boosted to £26,100 since news of a collection box theft was featured in the Lancashire Post.

“It means they have no worries about bills and they can relax as much as possible while they’re out in America”, said Nicola Dickinson, family friend who works with Amelia’s mum Cheryl at Flame Urban Spa in Garstang Road, Preston.

“The family are over the moon.

“They’re not the type of people to ask for help, but the community has really pulled together and the response from people since the story went in the paper has been unreal.”

Amelia received a shock
diagnosis of Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in early January 2017 after feeling under the weather for some weeks.

She has already lost the sight in one of her eyes despite undergoing three rounds of chemotherapy.

Last week she was fitted with a specialist mask for the proton beam proceedure, which is being paid for by the NHS.

Nicola added: “Everyone’s very hopeful and scans last week showed a good change in her results recently.

“Now the plan is to throw a massive party for when they all get home in August or September, to say thank you to everyone who has helped out.”
