The county council has approved a further five years of landscaping followed by five years of aftercare at the Clayton Hall Quarry and Landfill Site, Dawson Lane, Whittle le Woods, subject to conditions.

Residents have also voiced concerns over the extension.

But the council says the site will be regulated.

A spokesman said: “The site has had a long history of mineral extraction and tipping of waste.

“Current operations are undertaken in accordance with a number of existing planning permissions.”

The approval is subject to a 106 agreement.

A resident of the nearby Kirkby Avenue said she is unhappy with the extension due to the ‘foul’ smell, flies and seagulls.

The resident of ten years, who asked not to be named, said: “I’m annoyed we are facing another 10 years of this disgusting and foul smell.”

The site is also subject to an environmental permit issued by the Environment Agency – regulating the site management including waste types, pests, odours and noise.

An agency spokesman said the site will be monitored.

He said: “We have previously taken enforcement action against the site for non-compliance with their permit and are willing to take further action should it be necessary.

“The operators cover the waste and have a plan of progressive capping of the site to ensure deposited waste does not cause odour issues.”

Neales Waste Management, site owners, were not available for comment.
