Teen who fell 15ft from cliff hails rescue workers

Very lucky: Megan Walton returns to where she fell 15ft from the cliff.

Brave Megan Walton, 17, said she was “very lucky” after she lost her footing and plunged 15ft from the cliffs at Heysham sparking a rescue operation by the emergency services.

Megan suffered bruising and an injured knee but was otherwise  unscathed and actually returned to her job at McDonald’s later that day.

Megan, from Morecambe, had gone up onto the cliffs near St Peter’s Church last Thursday evening.

“I always go up there when I need to think, I love it because it’s a beautiful place,” said Megan.

“I sat up there for hours looking out to the sea. It was getting really dark.

“I was getting back up and I lost my footing on one of the rocks and then I slipped and fell down.

“I landed in such a funny position. I was screaming. I thought I had broken my leg.”

Megan said a police officer was first on the scene. The ambulance was then called at around 1.35am on Friday and coastguard and lifeboat crews were also on hand. I didn’t really know what was going on,” she said.

“I was in so much pain. But it was amazing how the emergency teams worked together. I can’t thank them enough.”

The crews worked together  to place Megan on a stretcher.

She was then taken by hovercraft to the Oakley Road slipway where she was transferred to an ambulance and taken to hospital, before being released later on  Friday.
