Engineers from Lancashire's gas emergency service, Cadent, were called to Golden Hill Lane on Sunday (November 29) after reports of a strong gas smell in the area.

Teams are still searching for the source of the suspected leak, but Cadent has reassured residents that there is no reason to be alarmed. It said "everything is under control and under monitoring".

Readings have been taken in the area near Leyland Station Surgery and higher than usual gas levels have been detected. But Cadent said "the readings aren’t at levels that need worry people".

Works are under way today to trace the leak, with excess gas being vented through holes drilled into the road surface outside Chesters Chicken takeaway. The works are not currently affecting traffic.

Cadent is urging anyone who smells gas in the wider area to report it immediately so that engineers can promptly investigate.

A Cadent spokesman said: "We’ve had reports of a gas smell in the air at this location and our teams are investigating that.

"The readings aren’t at levels that need worry people. Everything is under control and under monitoring.

"The holes are allowing the gas to vent to the atmosphere, where it will dissipate.

"We’ll identify the source and get it fixed as soon as we safely can.

"Anyone who smells gas must ring the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999, immediately, day or night.

"Please don’t assume it is related to this – what you can smell may be completely unconnected but we’d want to check that out."
