The appeal was launched by the Community Foundation for Lancashire on December 8 and will help nearly 1,000 people in hardship who have been affected by the flooding caused by Storm Desmond.

Appeal funding has been given already to households in hardship to replace damaged goods for uninsured properties, such as ruined clothes, lost children’s toys and new whitegoods.

Money has also been dished out to provide food, essentials and travel costs to and from temporary accommodation as well as a specialist medical bed for one household.

The Community Foundation, working with Lancaster and Wyre Councils, has identified the worst affected areas, informing households in hardship and vulnerable people how they can apply for further funding, above Government grants, for emergency repairs, travel and clean up costs.

Community Foundation Chief Executive Cathy Elliott said: “We are working as quickly as we can to respond to requests for funds from those in the greatest need. A big thank you goes to many people and organisations for helping us do this , including everyone who has made a donation as well as those Local Authority employees working on the ground with households.”

The Community Foundation is working in partnership with Lancashire County Council and Central Government who have recently announced that local authorities will be providing Community Grants as part of the Communities and Business Recovery Scheme.

This will be equivalent to over £500 per household affected to help with recovery costs to all affected households in Lancaster, Ribble Valley and Wyre.

Martin Kelly, Director of Economic Development at Lancashire County Council said: “All agencies are working extremely hard to get residents and businesses back to normality following the devastating floods. We know what a distressing time this is and it is our absolute priority to get people back in their homes and business back on their feet.”
