Preston speed-eaters will attempt to beat a record first set by local cricket legend Freddie Flintoff.
A competition has been organised to attempt to break the world record for eating the most parched peas in 30 seconds.
Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff took the record in 2012 when he managed to eat 38 peas in half a minute.
Now as part of the Love Food, Love Preston campaign, Preston’s Business Improvement District has organised the new record attempt.
Tables will be set out in Flag Market on August 1 between noon and 2pm, and everyone is invited to go along and attempt to eat 41 peas, to break the 40-pea record set last year by American Ashrita Furman.
BID manager Mark Whittle said: “The more we can do to put Preston and its food into the public eye the better and what better way to do that than by hosting this record attempt?
“This will be a fun day for all but will also promote a serious message that Preston has a fantastic variety of food on offer.
“There will be lots of great things happening during the Love Food, Love Preston campaign and for us to have something different like this to get it under way is really pleasing.
“Now all we need is lots of people willing to come down and give it a go. Come on, let’s break this record and give Preston yet another thing to shout about!”
Lancashire speciality parched peas, also known as black peas, have enjoyed a foodie revival since being featured on the BBC’s Great British Menu in 2010.

Although now available in some top London restaurants, they remain most popular from mobile stalls in Preston.
Andrea Mellon, owner and chef patron at Duk Pond in Cross Street, said: “It is a quirky way to put Preston in the spotlight and I am really looking forward to the day.
“There is so much variety of food in Preston but we must still embrace those core Lancashire food traditions and parched peas is one of them – although they are now being used in some of London’s top restaurants.
“This record attempt is a great way to kick off the month-long campaign which will really showcase everything our city has to offer.”
