Police reported several collisions between midnight and the morning rush hour as drivers struggled to cope with the slippery conditions.

In particular the motorways - M6, M61 and M65 - were all badly affected, although the conditions had eased considerably by the time most commuters set off for work.

Emergency services dealt with “numerous” vehicle recoveries in the early hours on the southbound carriageway of the M61 between its junction with the M6 and the turn-off to Chorley.

Police said traffic on the M6 between the Tickled Trout (Jct 31) and the M65 turn-off (Jct 29) had to put up with “horrendous” conditions just before daylight.

And the M65 itself was described as “difficult” from Hoghton towards East Lancashire, where the overnight snowfall was at its heaviest.
