A rare Jimi Hendrix album and a £160 Mouseman bowl are just some of the quality items donated every year to Derian House charity shops.

A team of 80 volunteers and 16 staff pull together to operate five shops in Chorley, Farnworth, Horwich, Bolton and Wigan, as well as a warehouse in Adlington.

Paul Booth, head of estates and retail, said: “We do get quality items coming into shops and being listed on our Ebay site.

“We take them all into our warehouse, get them itemised and cleaned up, and ready to get the best price in the shops.

“The shops and the volunteers who work in them are vital to the hospice – we couldn’t do what we do without the money and awareness they raise.

Shirley Parkinson, shop manager at Chorley, said: “We’re very thorough when we go through bags of donations and I’ve started watching Antiques Roadshow now so that nothing slips through the net!

“We’ll take almost anything, apart from big appliances and videos, and as well as our regulars, we’re beginning to see a wider range of people coming through the doors.

“We have been affected by the economic climate. Takings have definitely dropped since just before Christmas, because I don’t think anyone had any money.

“It tends to get busier towards the end of the month though when people get paid.”

Shirley takes on a range of roles at the shop, including sorting through donations, cleaning and administration.

She said: “I’ve been here two-and-a-half years and it’s the best job I’ve ever had. The hardest job, but the best.

“I love knowing that I’m helping the children instead of just lining some fat cat’s pockets.”

Shop volunteer John Nickson, 80, spends 16-and-a-half hours every week in shop.

He said: “I hate being bored, so I decided to volunteer.

“The people you meet are so interesting, and you get to give something back to the community.”
