The battle, which began on July 1, 1916, was the largest of the First World War, with more than a million soldiers killed or injured.

The anniversary concert, ‘Pals on Parade’, will take place at Chorley Town Hall on July 2 and will feature Leyland Band playing a selection of World War One era and military music.

They will also debut the Chorley of The Pals March – a piece composed in 1914 which has been reworked to be performed by the band on the night.

South Ribble Borough Council has teamed up with neighbouring Chorley Council to sponsor the event and has five pairs of tickets to give away.

They are asking people to share stories and pictures relating to the battle to win.

South Ribble Borough Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Coun Alan Ogilvie said: “This year marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and it would be wonderful to hear stories from our residents about their relatives and see any pictures they wish to share.”
