Schoolboy reaches grand final of Top Trumps contest

A schoolboy has played his cards right and is heading to the grand finals of a national Top Trumps competition.

Archie Oldham, 10, has come top out of 125,000 children, and has made it to the last stage of the National Top Trumps Schools Tournament this weekend.

The youngster, who is a pupil at Brindle Gregson Lane Primary School, near Hoghton, is one of 12 to be in the grand finals, and has been tipped as the favourite to win.

He soared into the finals in first place, defeating many children older than himself, and will now compete in the space-themed tournament.

To reach the finals Archie had to first become his school champion, then he beat children from across the UK in a three week online Top Trumpathon.

Archie, who lives in Bamber Bridge, said: “Once I start I get hooked in and just keep going and going.

“Last year I got into the final, and I was just determined to come first this year.

“I’m very happy to get into the grand finals, it was exciting to be the best out of everyone.

“I’m most looking forward to going to Birmingham.”
Archie said he would be spending the rest of this week practising, ahead of the competition on Saturday.

Last year he reached the final at school, but didn’t get through to the national grand finals, making him even more determined this year.

A record 2,500 schools entered the National Top Trumps Schools Tournament, which is now in its 7th year.

Event organiser Claire Simon, from Winning Moves UK, which owns and produces the Top Trumps brand, said: “It’s fun, camouflaged learning and schools embrace lots of our packs as a ‘teaching tool’. Congratulations to Archie we wish him all the very best in the weekend’s Grand Finals and he is already the champ of his school and has come out top so far from tens of thousands of children across the UK.”

The event will take place at Thinktank, Birimingham Science Museum.

Lisa Stallard, Manager at Thinktank, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Top Trumps Schools Tournament Grand Final and we are looking forward to welcoming all of the competitors to the Thinktank next Saturday.

“The theme of the event, ‘Planet Earth and beyond’, fits perfectly with the dynamic surroundings of our Science Museum and it’s a great chance for the young people involved to explore the museum’s exhibitions and planetarium.”
