And her victory on the celebrity version of the blockbuster show in aid of Sport Relief won a ringing endorsement from the man who knows her cooking the best.

“Wasn’t she magnificent,” said the PM on a visit to Lancashire today.

“I was watching with the children and they were punching the air.

“We knew the result, but they didn’t really believe it, I don’t think, until they had seen it.”

First Lady Sam beat off the challenge from ex-footballer David James, comedian Jason Manford and Eastenders actress Maddy Hill to be named star baker in the first heat of the charity show.

Clutching a bunch of flowers from her win, she said: “I’m normally being given flowers for being David’s wife. So it’s really nice being given flowers for, you know, something that I have done on my own.”

During the programme Samantha revealed her super-busy husband was and “enthusiastic” cook, but rubbish at tidying up.

Asked about his skills in the kitchen, Mr Cameron said: “I can’t do anything like that. I can feed people, but I can’t do any of the fancy stuff.”

He revealed Bake Off was “difficult,” but admitted Sam had practised two of the three elements of the show before going into the marquee.

“She did practice. But you can’t practice the technical challenge, that’s totally new.

“She practised the cake and she practised the vol-au-vents. They are unbelievably difficult things to make, yet Mary Berry said they were perfect.”
