A Royal inspiration for church garden

Members of 5th Penwortham Brownies and Guides have created a green space at the back of Kingsfold Methodist Church.

Their efforts have also enabled them to enter Penwortham Open Gardens and Penwortham in Bloom, in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

Suzanne Richards, Brownies leader, said: "The garden, designed and planted by the girls, is located on a former patch of grass at Kingsfold Methodist Church where the Units meet. A chance conversation between the Leaders resulted in them giving themselves the challenge of planting a few flowers to enter Penwortham In Bloom and also the Open Gardens event to raise money for St Catherine's Hospice.

"The result is a spectacular garden, which is themed around the Queen's 90th birthday and which draws on her experiences as a Guide herself. The Brownies and Guides have been involved from the start, learning how to grow plants from seed, creating a bug hotel, making bunting and planning entertainment for the afternoon tea event, which was an outstanding success.

"The garden has been very well received by members of the church congregation, saying it will enhance the grounds of Kingsfold Church for the future, especially our children’s events.

"The girls involved all really enjoyed the experience of creating the garden, with the Brownies completing their Gardener Badge during the process. The Leaders are proud of the efforts put in by the girls, demonstrating the positive impact that young people can have on their local communities.

"The inits would like to thank the many members of the local community who supported them during this project from providing raffle prizes to helping the girls with their gardening skills."
