At 65-years-old many men are gearing up for retirement, perhaps thinking of spending a bit more time on the allotment, but Pierre Paul Cayer is taking on the biggest challenge of his life.
The French Canadian from Quebec set off on a walk around the world when he turned 65.
Now, three years later, ‘dream walker’ Pierre’s epic trip has brought him to Preston.
On the seventh leg of his ‘Little Walk around the World’, Pierre stopped at Barton Grange Garden Centre on the A6 for a well-earned breakfast.
Restaurant manager Ben Carradice was more than happy to welcome the eccentric visitor.
“We had started service for breakfast when we spotted this guy outside,” said Ben, 29.
“I had actually seen him on my my way into work from Lancaster walking along the A6 and I thought that’s a little bit strange. But he came in and we got chatting, albeit in broken English, and when he told me what he was doing I was just astounded.
“Once customers and other members of staff got talking to him they couldn’t believe it either.”
Pierre had come over to the UK from his walk around Ireland, down into England from Edinburgh, and handed Ben a card from his dishevelled wallet filled with cards from his extensive travels.
“It said, ‘You don’t choose a life, you live one’.”
Pierre, who doesn’t travel with a mobile phone or camera, is reliant on well-wishers to send him the photographs they take of him to his blog or Facebook page.
Ben said: “We asked him about his family and he said they were right behind him.”
Pierre, who calls himself the ‘dream walker’, set off from Barton Grange and disappeared towards Cardiff, where he will then head to Dover and over to France.
He has already walked across his native country from Vancouver to St John’s, Newfoundland, and from the tip of North America at the Arctic Ocean down to the tip of South America at Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.
Pushing a three-wheel buggy filled with his belongings and bedecked in the Canadian colours, he hopes to complete his journey in seven years.
He explains his mission: “A walker is the one who can see-hear-feel-smell-touch from the human point of view.
“There is danger-pain-loneliness yes – but the extreme beauty of the inside spirit and the magnificence of the world and it’s people overpower the shadows of life.”
