Rail services between Preston and Manchester were disrupted after a person was hit by a train.
Buses were replacing trains between Preston and Manchester, because of a fatality on the railway line near Wigan on Friday morning.
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called to Kenyon Lane, Lowton, Wigan, this morning, Friday, December 18, at around 8am, following reports of a person being struck by a train.
“Colleagues from the North West Ambulance Service also attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers are now working to establish the person’s identity and the circumstances around the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.
“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
The incident has caused delays throughout the local network, with services brought to a standstill in Newton.
And First Transpennine Express have announced that there will be replacement bus service running on First Transpennine Express between Manchester Oxford Road and Wigan North Western, and between Preston and Manchester Oxford Road.
Passengers travelling between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street are advised to travel via Manchester Piccadilly.
Passengers travelling between Manchester Piccadilly and Scotland are advised to travel via Bolton.
