Promoter Eddie Hearn announced the two 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalists will face off next after Fowler’s win inside a round against Jose Carlos Paz in Sheffield on Saturday.

Preston’s rising star Fitzgerald was slated to face the Liverpudlian by the end of 2018 but a hand injury has sidelined him since his win over Craig Morris in September.

Hearn also indicated that the winner of Fitzgerald-Fowler would go on to face current British super-welterweight champion Ted Cheeseman in their next fight.

"I like Scott but it's business, and I will smash him," Fowler said after moving to 9-0 with eight knockouts.

"Ted Cheeseman is getting punished too. Wait and see. I don't like the kid.

"He is deluded. He's a boy and I am a man."
