Preston's bus station masterplan moves a step closer

The next stage in the multi-million pound transformation of Preston's bus station site has moved a step closer.

County council officials have submitted an application for planning permission to close the station’s western apron to create the highly-anticipated public square.

It forms part of the £23m revamp of the city landmark which will see a Youth Zone built at one end of the public realm area, with the entire project linking to the new Markets Quarter.

The plans include the formation of a new coach station drop-off point at the south side of the station building, with the bus stops currently on the western apron moved across to the opposite side of the building.

In its place will be the public square with lawn and tree features, seating booths and event space.

Meanwhile, the Youth Zone building - which has already received planning approval - will be constructed to the north of the site.

The request for planning permission - given the station’s listed building status - is due to
minor amendments from when it was first submitted to the city council last year.

The documents read: “This development would also enable the Bus Station to operate more efficiently as a modern transport hub, by providing a more civilised user experience.

“The only amendment to the previous application is the removal of two linear sections of dwarf wall from the former taxi rank to help prevent antisocial behaviour and provide a more balanced landscaping scheme.”
