The grand-daughter of a woman who went missing more than half a century ago has told how the family’s agonising search for answers has never ended.

Margaret Ellen McLaren vanished from her home in Croft Street, Preston, in the 1960s. The 73-year-old widow disappeared without a trace and, despite major searches, she was never found.

The family never really had any closure as after seven years Mrs McLaren was legally declared dead.

Her grand-daughter, Linda Alston, 68, of Warton, who was a just a teenager at the time, today told of the grief which beset her family and how her disappearance still remains unsolved.

She said the family has never had any answers and added: “As I’ve got older, I have thought about it more. It’s strange how she has never been found.”

Lancashire Police said it is likely the case has been archived, but explained that the way cases are dealt with has changed since the 1960s.
