A Preston garden centre has launched a campaign to turn empty green spaces into poppy fields to mark the centenary of World War One.

Dobbies is giving away 12,000 poppy seeds to community groups around the UK to do its bit for the war effort. And locally “Poppies For Our Heroes” will help schools, charities and other organisations put on a show of red to honour the fallen of a century ago. Carol Robinson, community champion at Dobbies Garden Centre, Preston, said: “We think it’s a great way for our local community to mark the 100th anniversary. Poppies need to be planted in March or April to ensure a colourful display for Remembrance Day in November.”
