POLL RESULTS: Lancashire votes to leave the EU

Could Lancashire be on the verge of voting to leave the European Union tomorrow? Well judging by a poll of LEP readers, the answer is yes.

Out of 1,496 votes, more than 900 people said they wanted out of the EU ahead of Thursday’s referendum.

The poll goes directly against previous research which said Lancashire’s vote would be the closest match to the decision of the nation, because of how tight the polls would be.

Chris Hanretty, professor of politics at the University of East Anglia, said that the county is set to be Britain’s “bellweather” region, broadly indicating how people are voting nationwide.

Prof Hanretty said his research showed the vote in many Lancashire towns and cities will be too close to call with research indicating the vote in Preston would see 40.3 per cent choose remain and 42.7 per cent voting leave.

“I’ve combined lots of different sources of information, with a limited number of respondents and it wouldn’t surprise me if the vote swung five per cent either way,” said the professor earlier this week.

“It’s based on the demographic make up - the percentage of people with different qualifications, and there’s a general pattern that higher education areas are in favour of remain.

“It’s also based on age profiling, socio-economic factors and housing.”

The polls officially open tomorrow at 7am with the result expected to be announced on Friday morning.
