Mayor's VJ day tribute

Garstang mayor Coun Elizabeth Webster is planning to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ (Victory over Japan) day on August 15 at home.

But in advance of the day Coun Webster has issued a statement detailing Garstang Town Council’s appreciation of the sacrifices and commitment of those who served in the Far East.

She said: ”I will be marking the occasion at home with my family as we did for the 75th anniversary of VE Day. On behalf of Garstang Town Council,I would like to pay tribute and my respects to the thousands of service personnel who fought and died in the war against Japan, including all those who were held as prisoners of war.

“It is a great shame that we are unable to organise an event to pay tribute to the tens of thousands of service personnel from across the UK and the Commonwealth who fought and died ... including all those who were held as prisoners of war”
