Chairman of Lancashire County Council Terry Aldridge walks out of meeting

The chairman of Lancashire County Council Terry Aldridge handed over his chains and walked out of a full council meeting tonight.

Tweeting from the meeting Liberal Democrat councillor and Preston West representative John Potter‏ wrote: "I've never seen that before. The chairman of @LancashireCC has walked out."

A spokesperson for the county council said: "The chairman is unable to continue with the rest of the meeting and the deputy chair Anne Cheetham has now taken over."

Mr Aldridge is a member of the Labour party and represents Skelmersdale Central.

It is unclear at this stage what this means for his future.

On being contacted by the Post Mr Aldridge said he did not wish to comment on the incident.

At the same meeting councillors banned Lancashire schools from serving halal meat from animals which are not stunned before slaughter.

This comes after leader of LCC survived a bid to topple him earlier this afternoon. A vote of no confidence in Tory boss coun Geoff Driver was defeated by 45 votes to 34 with one abstention at an extraordinary meeting of the council.
