Talks between the two parties started in January after the EDL announced that it is planning to hold its first demonstration of the year in the city on February 20.

The event is due take place on the same day that Preston North End entertain Sheffield Wednesday at Deepdale and Preston and South Ribble Trades Council and United Against Fascism announced last week that they are also planning to hold a counter diversity celebration event on the day of the demonstration at Preston Flag Market.

A spokesman for Lancashire police said the force is still in discussions with the EDL about the event.
