Chief Insp. Dave Mangan, from Lancashire Police, said the day had been exceptionally busy for emergency services with 600 properties across the county flooded.

River levels could yet rise again, however, with further rain and a red ‘take action’ Met Office weather warning for rain is active until 9pm tonight. This will be replaced by an amber warning for rain until 11-45pm.

Chief Insp. Mangan said: “It has been an incredibly busy day with severe flood warnings with threat to life across Whalley, Ribchester and St Michael’s on Wyre. They have taken priority focus.

“We have also taken and moved vulnerable people across the county. We have been fortunate with football matches being called off, allowing us to move officers from those games to deal with the flood threat and risks.

“The emergency services as well as Environment Agency, county and borough councils, have done a fantastic job. They have really stepped up to pull together and worked hard.

“We must thank all Lancashire residents who have really responded and really helped as well by remaining calm to keep safe.”
