On Monday, the force confirmed it was “looking into” claims about council leader Margaret Smith, who recently resigned as company secretary of five businesses.

Police failed to mention another councillor had also been reported and no details of their identity have been given.

Today a spokesman told the Evening Post: “Further to your enquiries about an allegation of failing to disclose pecuniary interests against two South Ribble Councillors, we can now confirm that there is no longer any police involvement in the matter and the investigation will be carried out by the local authority.”

Coun Phil Smith, speaking on behalf of his wife due to ill health, said an accountancy error had lead to her being registered as company secretary when she has had no involvement in the companies since 2007, and had never had any financial interest in any of them.
