Preston North End have found themselves at the centre of a Twitter storm after making a joke at the expense of One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson.

Teen heartthrob Tomlinson is also a big fan of Doncaster Rovers, and was apparently devastated when goalkeeper Sam Johnstone decided to go on loan to PNE.

When Tomlinson tweeted that it was a “shame about Sam Johnstone leaving”, the PNE official account replied with the tongue in cheek comment “Sorry Louis, we didn’t realise @samjohnstone50 was an integral part of 1D. The boy can sing, maybe that’s why he left.”

But One Direction fans, notorious for their overreactions on social media, failed to see the funny side and have been bombarding the club’s account with abuse.

PNE are in good company – previous targets of Directioners’ rage include Taylor Swift and Caroline Flack, who have both reportedly dated band members, and the documentary maker behind Crazy About One Direction, an account of some of the band’s more enthusiastic fans.
