Members of a weight loss group have raised £555.55 for Lancashire Mind by donating their spare 5ps at weekly meetings.
Plungington Slimming World members have been placing the 5p change they receive from the weekly fee into collection tins for the last 12 months. A total of 11,111 5ps have been donated by the group’s 170 members over the course of the year.
Group leader Matt Grimes chose to raise funds for Lancashire Mind as he felt that the charity’s vision was something he and other members could relate to.
Matt, who raised £1,100 for Mind by doing the Great North Run this year, said: “I, like other members of the group, am aware of the effect weight issues and food habits can have on a person’s mental wellbeing.
“Eating a balanced diet and losing weight can help give you positive feelings, more energy, calmer moods, clearer thinking and better self esteem.
“Many of our members know what a difference improved mental wellbeing can make so I felt that choosing to fund-raise for Lancashire Mind would enable us to help others to improve their mental wellbeing too.
“When I suggested fund-raising for Lancashire Mind the group members were really forthcoming and thought it was a great idea. I’m very proud of how much we have raised and how the members have got behind this. It’s incredible to think that all those 5ps have added up to over £555.55.”
Holly Mannion, of Lancashire Mind Community Development, said: “On behalf of everyone at Lancashire Mind I would like to thank Matt and all the members of the Plungington Slimming World group for their fantastic fund-raising effort.
“It’s thanks to the generosity of people such as Matt and the members of the group that we can continue to work towards our vision of mental wellbeing for all. “The funds they have raised will help Lancashire Mind to continue to stop misconceptions about mental health, develop resilience in people from an early age and work with communities to build a happier Lancashire.”
