Refugees and asylum seekers from countries across the world came together for a special welcome event in Leeds organised by a group of churches.

More than 70 people from countries including Syria, Cameroon and Afghanistan travelled by bus to Wharfemeadows Park and the River Wharfe in Otley before visiting Methodist Church for lunch.

The event at the weekend was organised by Churches Together in Otley, a group of churches, and also included games before stories were shared by refugees.

Ron Sweeney, chairman of Churches Together, said: “It was then heartwarming to see how the children and adults joined together in simple games and singing after all the hardships they had faced before finding a warm welcome.”
