Mother of Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan passes away in Lancashire hospice

The mother of a Lancashire Royal Marine who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 has died.

Lynn Warren passed away in St Catherine's Hospice, Lostock Hall, on Saturday.

Her son, Paul Warren, 23, who was serving with Charlie Company, 40 Commando Royal Marines, was killed in Afghanistan on Monday, June 21, 2010.

He suffered fatal injuries in an explosion when Patrol Base Airport Lounge was attacked by insurgents.

Marine Warren was born in Preston and lived with his family in Leyland.

He joined the Royal Marines in 2006..

His father Cliff Warren made an announcement about his wife's death on the Leyland memories public Facebook group on Monday.

He posted: "It is with the saddest heart that I let Leyland know that on Saturday I lost my wife, my friend Lynn Warren at St Catherine’s Hospice.

"To those who can remember or attended our Sons Military Funeral in June 2010 Marine Paul Warren at Saint Andrews, Lynn showed all the true fighting spirit of a Royal Marines Mum.

"For over 25 years she cared for the people of Leyland and the local areas and truly made their lives more bearable in their times of need, it was a vocational job for her.

"She will take the same route as her son took to Saint Andrews Parish Church.

"Her funeral will be held on the 11 February at 10.00 o’clock, with COVID rules only a small number of family can enter the church. After the service Lynn will be taken to Charnock Richard Crematorium again COVID rules apply.

"To those that knew Lynn or she took care of pls take time to remember her".

Marine Warren’s family paid the following tribute shortly after his death: "A loving son, a brother and grandson who made us proud as a family. His cheeky smile will be missed by all who knew him."

Lieutenant Colonel Paul James, Commanding Officer, 40 Commando Group, Combined Force Sangin, said: "Marine Paul Warren was an outstanding Marine. He was bright, articulate, loyal and very brave. He was without doubt the epitome of his profession. Having previously served in Sangin only last year, his experience was invaluable in preparing and at times reassuring the men of 9 Troop.

"He was a man of presence, a man who inspired others with his professional example and equanimity. Paul was sharp; he was fit, always keen to learn, and was utterly selfless.

"He took pride in what he did and others took confidence from his approach to life. I saw in him a dedicated, reliable, talented and intelligent Marine who had a promising career cut tragically short.

"He died in his Patrol Base in Sangin, doing the job he loved and alongside the people who will know him forever as a true friend.

"He was one of life’s greats and he will be sorely missed by all in 40 Commando. Marine Paul Warren was, and will always remain, a Royal Marines Commando."
