Love is in the 'Squarea' with scenic Rivington's treasured gift offer

Rivington Terraced Gardens, enjoyed for its scenic walks by lots of lovebirds, is giving couples the chance to sponsor a 10 square metre virtual patch of land called a Squarea’ in The Japanese Garden, The Italian Lake, The Dell, The Woodlands or The Lawns for just £20.

Owners of each dedicated certificate also have their name added to an online roll call and can choose to support the area that is the setting for their cherished memories.

Individuals and businesses can pledge £20 to sponsor a 10 square metre virtual patch, that will help towards the annual maintenance costs, which are more than £100,000 per year.

Each Squarea sponsored will help towards upkeep of The Gardens for the next five years.

With over 20,000 patches on offer, the initiative provides a unique gifting opportunity for members of the public - especially in the run up to Valentine’s Day.

Sponsors of each Squarea will receive a personal certificate confirming their commitment to the gardens. Ideal as a lasting legacy for people who love the area, the initiative allows people to invest in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Designed in Edwardian times by prominent landscape architect, Thomas Mawson, The Gardens were built by soap magnate and politician, Lord Leverhulme, to mark the special area where he courted Lady Leverhulme many years before.

The Gardens are inspired by their travels together and the Pigeon Tower, built as a peaceful sanctuary for Lady Leverhulme to enjoy her sewing and the beautiful views, is further testament to the love story behind this enchanting location.

Rivington has a magical appeal because of its unique architecture, history and beautiful landscapes.

The area is a popular location for weddings, including that of Bolton-born celebrities, Tess Daly and Vernon Kay.

To further celebrate Valentine’s Day this year and offer a post-lockdown treat during these difficult times, everyone who sponsors a Squarea from now until February 14 will be entered into a prize draw for two tickets to the ‘Tea on the Lawn’ event scheduled for late summer* depending on lockdown restrictions..

The area has undergone a transformation in recent years, thanks to the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) and the work of hundreds of volunteers, but needs additional support to raise the £100,000 annual conservation costs.

Richard Galloway, a director at Rivington Heritage Trust, said: “Like many charities, COVID has meant that we have struggled to raise the necessary funds for the upkeep of The Gardens in the last twelve months, as many events have been cancelled.

“We’re delighted that this campaign has captured the hearts of so many people across the country and beyond.

"We’ve even received support from people who have emigrated overseas, which shows what a lasting impression this beautiful area has on all those who visit to enjoy the scenery and

picturesque walks.”
