Parish Council steps in to replace damaged bus shelter

Farington Parish Council has stepped in to replace a damaged bus shelter after the borough council could not find the money.

The shelter in Croston Road was damaged in an accident and it had been impossible to find out who was responsible.

Due to the cost of replacing the shelter - more than £4,000 for a three-bay shelter and perch seat - South Ribble Council proposed a ‘lollipop’ type stop.

But several residents complained to Councillor Mike Otter, chairman of Farington Parish Council, that this would be unsuitable for the elderly people who used it.

They asked Coun Otter and other members to consider replacing the shelter using some of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CiL) monies given to the Parish Council.

The clerk of the parish council received confirmation from South Ribble Council that it would not replace the bus shelter and after getting quotes for the work, it was unanimously agreed that the bus shelter should be purchased by the Parish Council from CiL monies.

A plaque with ‘donated by Farington Parish Council’ will also be placed in the shelter.

No date for the installation work to start has been given.

The CiL is a new system of funding infrastructure such as cycleways, playgrounds through planning charges that the Council can ask developers to pay for most new building projects.
