Over the weekend of July 15 and 16, Simon Bleasdale, his brother Nick, Dean Ash, Eugene Marchuk, Joel Jackson, Tom Barnes, Lloyd Rigby and James Boyd will tackle the Lakes 3000 Challenge – a 48km trek taking in Lakeland’s eight highest peaks, among them Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.

The challenge in aid of Rosemere Cancer Foundation, is the group’s tribute to pal Dave Wall, who lived in Ashton on Ribble with wife Hannah and one-year-old daughter Imogen.

On Christmas Eve, Dave, who worked as a groundsman at UCLAN Sports Arena, was diagnosed with bowel cancer. He died on February 18.

Simon, who was Dave’s best man at his wedding in May, said: “Dave’s illness and death came as a tremendous shock. It was like one minute we were celebrating his marriage and looking forward to the future and the next, we were together again for his funeral.

“Dave was a fit, outdoors person. He even chose a career that meant he could work outside and he would have loved the idea of tackling the Lakes 3000 Challenge. This is why we think it’s a fitting tribute and we are doing it to raise money for Rosemere.”

Joining the group will be Dave’s brother Adam, his brother-in-law Rob Thompson and father-in-law Geoff Thompson.

Hannah Wall said: “Dave would be so proud of what his friends and family are doing in order to raise money for such a great cause. He will definitely be with them all throughout it. Imogen and I can’t thank everyone enough for their kind donations and to our friends and family for challenging themselves.”
