“To have been well for 13 years is a big achievement. It is down to the fund-raising that people have done in the past that I am here now, so I wanted to give something back for the future.

“Back in 2005 I found a lump in my breast. It was a very difficult time as I was on my own with my seven-year-old daughter. But my family and Teresa helped me through it. Things are a lot better for me now.

“I am apprehensive about the trek as it is not something I have done before, but you have to do things while you are fit and able. Life is for living.”

Teresa said: “I did a similar trek in China nine years ago for the Alzheimer’s Society, for my mum. Ciss Walker, who died three years ago. She had Azheimer’s.
