Who's the Daddy: Trying to track competent MPs

Who wudda thunk it? The government threatened us to go back to work or risk losing our jobs, told us to Eat Out To Help Out and then sent the kids back to school, all without a functioning test and trace system in place – and then had the brass neck to blame us for the spike in Covid cases and threaten us with Lockdown 2.

The test and trace system that the government outsourced to Serco and others is “world-beating” alright, in that it’s the lousiest on Earth. Like Jonathan Pie said last week, Health Secretary Matt Hancock couldn’t track and trace his own backside.

The only thing that matches ministers’ incompetence is their arrogance. You’d think after all we’ve been through in the past six months they’d have learnt a few things, such as how more successful countries like Germany run their excellent test and trace system and copying that. But all they appear to have mastered is looking smug on TV.

And we’re no further along than we were six months ago, apart from the most vulnerable people in this country have already died from it.

The only thing they’ve got control of is us.

I’m no class warrior and don’t run a blue or red flag up my pole, but to every teacher and parent reading this, whose children are crammed into classrooms in unworkable bubbles, remember this – at the start of term, all staff and students at Eton got a Covid test.

It’s hard to follow government advice when they change their story every few days.

In Lockdown 1 we all went along with it for a few weeks.

But after Dominic Cummings put his family in the car and drove up to Durham when everybody else was only allowed outside for an hour a day, got called out on it and not only straight-batted his way through an excruciating hour in front of the nation’s press but was backed to the hilt by Michael Gove and all the rest, it’s not hard to see how public trust evaporated.

If those in power act like they’re above the law then what incentive is there for us to obey it?
