A Preston courier business owner is off on a journey with a difference – to take part in the famous Monte Carlo or Bust car rally.
David Hodgkinson and wife Barbara are driving their 20-year-old Jaguar XJS on their 700-mile epic journey.
As well as celebrating David’s 50th birthday, the couple are also hoping to raise thousands of pounds for the NSPCC.
Car enthusiast David, of Penwortham, runs Preston’s Roadrunner North West business.
He and Barbara are setting off for the Monte Carlo “Champagne Charlie” banger rally next month, a journey which will take them through some of Europe’s greatest roads and cities for three days.
Champagne Charlie starts in the beautiful Roman city of Saint Quentin and ends in Dijon, the capital of Burgundy and home to some of the best wine growing fields in the world.
On day two contestants burn rubber and brakes into Switzerland, around the magnificent Lake Geneva, before conquering the mighty Grand St Bernard Pass. Day three sees cars cruise across the border into France and finish at Monte Carlo. A lap of the F1 circuit and parking up at the Casino complete the experience.
David, a member of the Jaguar Drivers’ Club, said of the decision to enter the rally: “We enjoy getting about – so we thought why not? We could have a good time, mark my birthday and raise money for charity as well. We are thoroughly looking forward to it. We want to raise as much money as we can.”
