OAP on mobility scooter rescued from sea at Morecambe

The man was believed to have been walking his dog on the beach near Sunny Slopes in Heysham when he got into difficulties.

A passerby called emergency services at 10.55am today as the water rose up his mobility scooter.

Sea levels were up to the man’s waist as he sat in his chair unable to move with the tide rising rapidly.

Firefighters from Morecambe, Lancaster and Bolton-le-Sands went to the scene near Whinnysty Lane and three firefighters managed to get the man off his scooter and on to dry land.

The man was uninjured but extremely cold so was transferred to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary for checks.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the scooter had to be left in the sea.

The spokesman said: “Members of the public must be reminded of the dangers of mud, sand and rapidly rising tidal water whilst taking part in activities on the coastline and beach, particularly with the seasonal high tides we are currently experiencing.”
