Neighbours to the rescue in kitchen blaze

Neighbours raised the alarm when fire broke out in a house in Penwortham.

Two fire crews managed to extinguish the blaze which started in the kitchen of the property in Lark Avenue at around 2.20pm on Friday,

The family were not at home, but a smoke alarm alerted the neighbours to the emergency.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “Two fire engines and crews from Penwortham and Bamber Bridge, responded to a 999 call reporting a fire in a neighbour’s house and a smoke alarm could be heard.

“Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used a hosereel jet to extinguish a fire in a kitchen and used a portable fan to extract the smoke.

“No-one was at home and there were no casualties.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be established.”
