An error in legislation has resulted in some social housing tenants being exempted from the bedroom tax and eligible for a refund, according to West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper.

She said the exemption applies to tenants who have been continuously claiming housing benefit from before January 1, 1996 and have lived at the same address.

She claims a Department for Work and Pensions bulletin instructed councils that some tenants should have their bedroom tax cut removed.
