They said showers were moving slowly, meaning places were getting “stuck” underneath them.

Met Office forecasters are warning of possible localised flooding and disruption to travel where downpours occur.

They are also warning of lightning causing an additional hazard, and said, on Thursday, the rise in temperatures could again trigger slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Warnings are in place from 10am until 9pm on Wednesday, and from 10am until 10pm Thursday.

It said the torrential rain would bring a risk of flash flooding, particularly if across urban areas.
