Man charged over attack as others are released

A 24-year-old Leyland man has been charged following a serious assault in Chorley town centre.

Jonathan Fitzsimmons, of Westfield Drive, has been charged with section 18 wounding with intent, and was remanded in custody.

He appeared at Preston Magistrate’s Court this morning.

The incident happened at just after midnight on Sunday, November 30, at the junction of Union Street and Park Road.

Thirty-year-old Martin Catterall, from Lostock Hall, had been out with friends when he was attacked.

Mr Catterall was found lying in the street with head injuries and was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital where he underwent an operation.

He remains critically ill with life threatening injuries and is on life support.

The two 19-year-old men and a 20-year-old man who had been arrested on suspicion of assault have been released facing no further action.

The investigation continues and officers are still appealing for any further witnesses to come forward, particularly those in the beer garden of the White Hart pub, Chorley.
