A man has been arrested on suspicion of affray and false imprisonment after he threatened a woman with a knife at a Preston tower block, say police.

Police were initially called out to a concern for safety at a flat in Avenham Lane at 7.35am on Monday, November 20.

Five fire engines, ambulance services and police all stood on standby at the scene of the high-rise tower block.

Police say that they arrived to find a man had barricaded himself and a woman in the flat and threatened her with a knife.

A spokesman for the police said: "We were called to a high rise block of flats in Avenham Lane, Preston, at 7.35 this morning after a concern for safety of the occupier.

"On arrival the man had barricaded a woman inside the flat and was making threats to her with a knife.

"Police and fire crews were called and a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and false imprisonment."

The woman has been taken to safety.
