A man accused of robbing a grave in Lytham has made his first appearance at court.

Kenneth Bamber, a 42-year-old civil engineer, of Balfour Road, Fulwood, Preston, is charged with stealing the statue of a Japanese woman.

A widow had placed the statue on the grave of her husband in the graveyard at St John’s Parish Church in the resort.

Bamber is also accused of going equipped for theft with spades, a meat cleaver, crowbars, a torch, angle grinder and bolt cutter, outside a graveyard in Saltcotes Road, Lytham.

The offence is alleged to have taken place on November 8 last year.

Bamber pleaded not guilty to both offences and was bailed for trial by District Judge Jim Clarke sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.
