Drivers using the southbound M6 around junction 34 at Lancaster will find a hard shoulder and lane one closed after this weekend as a new phase in Lancashire County Council’s Heysham Link project gets underway.

The arrangements, which will be in place ahead of and slightly beyond the southbound entry slip road, are expected to be in place until March as new slip roads are constructed ahead of the opening of the new link road. A 50mph speed limit will also be in place past the closures. Similar arrangements have been in place along the northbound carriageway since last year.

Traffic management for the lane and hard shoulder closures will be installed overnight tonight with a full southbound carriageway closure between junction 35 at Carnforth and junction 34 until 6am on Sunday morning.

During tonight’s closure, drivers travelling south on the M6 will be diverted off the motorway at junction 35 (Carnforth) and sent along the A6 and A683 Caton Road in Lancaster to rejoin the motorway at junction 34.

The £124.5 million Lancashire County Council road project started in January of last year and is due to be completed by next summer. Drivers using the southbound M6 should leave extra time to complete journeys.
