Horses brought traffic to a standstill on the M6 motorway.
A car with a horse box broke down this afternoon on the southbound carriageway, between junctions 34 at Lancaster and 33 at Galgate.
Highways England had to stop traffic heading in both directions on the motorway while the horses were moved into another vehicle.
The horses were safely transferred.
However, an accident on the same stretch of motorway shortly afterwards has caused more delays for drivers.
There was a collision between a car and van and the emergency services were called to the motorway.
Two lanes have been closed and a spokesman for Highways England said there are currently delays of between 60 and 90 minutes.
