First aider Julie Heys, who lives on nearby Waterbarn Street, helped to stem the bleeding from the boy’s injuries.

Julie (47) who used to be in the St John Ambulance and is a first aider at TRW Engineering, said: “We were at home when my husband heard a commotion so we went to see what was happening.

“When I got there the boy had just been attacked by the dog and was sat on a wall. He was hysterical and was bleeding heavily.

“He had been bitten on the lower leg. I tried to calm him down and put pressure on the leg to stop the bleeding – I have never seen so much blood.

“Apparently, the dog had bitten a young woman shortly before. A lot of people had gathered and some people were arguing over who owned the dog.

“The police and ambulance arrived and the boy was taken away. The boy’s injuries looked really bad but I think it could have been a lot worse.

“I’m just happy I could do what I could. I hope he will be okay.”

Police confirmed that the dog had been seized and said the boy was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

A 28-year-old woman admitted herself to Burnley General Hospital with minor injuries.
