A lifeboat was launched after reports that a fisherman was in trouble in the sea at Heysham.
Morecambe’s RNLI inshore hovercraft was called by the coastguard to investigate a report that a fisherman was in difficulty near the North Wall at Heysham harbour.
The hovercraft searched the area at 7.30pm on Monday, when crews realised the call was a false alarm.
The lights that had been seen belonged to a party of sea anglers who were out fishing in their boats.
Morecambe RNLI volunteer lifeboat operations manager, Kevin Jackson, said: “This was our first call-out for 2015 and, although it proved to be a false alarm, it is better to be safe than sorry.
“We would encourage anybody who genuinely believes that someone is at risk, to respond as this caller did and report it.”
