A report is being drawn up on the future of Hill Road Cemetery in Penwortham.

Steve Caswell, town manager for Penwortham Town Council, which runs the site, told a committee meeting that at the current burial rate, there is approximately 16 years capacity left for cremated remains and approximately 13 years for full burials.

The committee agreed that two further reports be prepared on the Advanced Purchases at the cemetery and another report detailing how the council can forward plan .

Both will be brought before the next cemetery committee meeting, which is yet to be scheduled.

Hill Road Cemetery was first opened in 1965.

Last year a new woodland burial site opened next to the cemetery. Coffins there are interred without headstones or memorials, and the surrounding area is being allowed to grow back to its natural state.
