A man died after he was in collision with a vehicle on the M6 motorway last night.

The incident happened close to junction 23 at around 10.55pm.

Traffic was brought to a standstill on both the northbound and southbound carriageways, which were closed by police.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a man was seen walking along the hard shoulder on the northbound carriageway, facing the southbound traffic.

“He crossed the northbound carriageway and was struck by a Land Rover and died at the scene,” said the spokesperson.

The man’s identification has not been released, but he is said to come from the Wigan area.

Both the northbound and southbound carriageways were closed for some hours at junction 23.

The North West Motorway Police closed the northbound carriageway before opening the first lane to release trapped traffic.

The southbound carriageway was also closed.

The first and second southbound lanes were up and running again around five hours ago, before the southbound carriageway was fully reopened.

Junction 23 was reopened around three hours ago.
